With the explosion of the multi-billion dollar beauty industry there seems to be a trend developing. Businesses are starting to blur the lines between a salon and spa. What once was only available in a salon is starting to appear in spas all over the world. Businesses who once specialized, now find themselves offering a wide array of beauty services giving the consumer a one stop beauty experience.

Some of the beauty product retailers have full hair salons and nail salons inside their stores. I’m sure it won’t be long before they start to add the spa services as well. It reminds me a lot of what happened in the automotive maintenance industry. Automotive repair and service are now being offering at previously exclusive oil change and tire service centers. The margins on oil changes and tires are so low that in order to create a viable business, these shops have to generate additional revenue for their sheer survival. And what more logical way than to offer a complete auto repair service lineup.

The beauty industry is following along the same lines. Simple nail salons have started to realize that as both the cost of living and the cost of running a business go up they need more revenue. The logical choice is to expand in other areas of the beauty industry. These businesses have eliminated the distinction between a salon and spa. Spas today offer traditional salon service and salons have added traditional spa services. Soon we will have mega-beauty complexes where you can get your hair, nails, massages, facials, makeup, tanning, waxing and any other beauty service you can think of. I’m not sure the drive-thru beauty salon is something that we’ll see but I think we’ll get close!

Most of the small salon and spa owners are reluctant owners at best. They are the individuals who perform the actual services and consist of hairdressers, nail techs, masseuses etc. They would rather just do what they do and not have to worry about the details and headaches of running a business. It is a mindset thing. The problem is that they don’t want to give up the freedom that being your own boss yields. I see a niche developing in salon and spa businesses. If they can have their freedom but not have to worry about the business aspects, they will be very happy. These mega-beauty complexes will start to fill that void and provide these individual proprietors a sense of relief. They will be able to be a part of a business and not be “the” business. Obviously they will have to give up a little income in order to give up the headaches of owning your own business, but I think a lot of people will consider that a small price to pay.

Salon and spa owners across the county are starting to get an idea of how they want their businesses to be structured. They are combining their services with other salons and spas to create the synergies that larger complexes already enjoy. The next logical step for these businesses is to move into larger facilities in order to incorporate all of the additional services.

What’s all the buzz?

Tingle tanning lotions contain active ingredients that manufacturers state enhance the overall tanning process by stimulating microcirculation. This is where concentration is on blood flowing through smaller systems of 100 microns or less, which are closes to the body’s skin surface area. Tingle tanning lotions include ingredients that act, well, as skin irritants causing increased blood flow to the area where the substance is applied. In the case of tingle tanning lotions, these ingredients are known as “photo irritants” because they are sensitive to light. This sensitivity is what causes greater blood flow allowing for increased tanning to take place. Application causes a “tingle” effect that users experience. This tingle effect is caused by the lotion’s ingredients that although many brand manufacturers refuse to reveal, product labels list such components like niacin, capsicum, capsaicin, nicotine and certain spices such as nutmeg. These ingredients cause that “tingle” effect and can vary greatly from one person to another.

Individual reaction can vary when using a tingle tanning lotion so it is highly recommended to “experiment” with small application amounts before attempting a tanning session. Tanners should check to see what the skin reaction will be to application of a tingle tanning lotion to determine individual tolerance. One product may have adverse reactions while another may not. Most experienced and qualified salon operators can advise people determining what tingle tanning lotion may best be suited to a particular skin type. It’s a good starting point, since experienced operators are qualified to make product recommendations. However, some testing of different products may be necessary to find the most suitable one.

A good salon operator will recommend a package deal of products that include tingle tanning lotions, non-tingle products as well as after tanning products that help cool the skin down as well as help as skin moisturizers.

With a little research and self-education, a person can become an informed consumer. Products such as tingle tanning lotions can play a large part in anyone’s daily skin care routine. Keep in mind that tanning can present certain harmful effects, but, when used cautiously by a well-informed consumer can produce results that enhance one’s appearance and confidence.

Spray tanning has really become incredibly popular in the UK largely due to the negative and fear publicity created by the more dramatic daily publications and certain concerns with their own agenda regarding the theoretical dangers of sunbeds and the sun.

Tanning became popular during the 1950′s and with the advent of foreign holidays, became a reality in the 1960′s. However, it was not until the mid 1970′s that the sunbed was available and suddenly everyone (who tanned) could boast a Mediterranean tan.

During the late 1970′s, throughout the 1980′s and early 1990′s the use of sunbeds grew dramatically until the drip drip effect of certain scare stories began to take effect and gradually the general public began to believe that using a sunbed would cause skin cancer.

The whole aspect of sunbathing in the UK is now in a state of confusion as the sun and sunbeds stand accused of being the harbinger of ill health. The truth is that it (i.e. sunshine – UVA/UVB therefore sunbeds) are one of the four essentials of life, without ultra violet we would die. It has taken mankind millions of years to evolve in a radiation filled world and this radiation is vital to all life as we know it on our planet.

Most of the major supplies of suntanning equipment (sunbeds and stand ups) have been devastated in many ways by the trend away from natural tanning to the increased use of spray tanning, which really started in the mid 1990′s with the success of the American product, St. Tropez marketed in this country by Judy Naake who was an agent for one of the main sunbed companies on the cosmetic side from 1990 to 1994!

The runaway success of this alternative to sunbeds has created a huge number of other company’s trying their hand at self tanning creams. In the salon, spray tanning both with a manual spray and with an automatic booth has now become an important alternative. However, what is worthy of note is that this is the only country in the world that has vilified sunbeds (and to a lesser extent – the sun) and has created such a following with a chemical application of fluid which turns the skin brown!

One major new player in the spray tan market is Quadra Medical of Italy and has for the last eighteen months been relatively successful in the UK in providing, probably, the best of the spray tan products available with the “That’So” range which not only incorporates the fluid, but also a very classy manual spray system and a very compact, futuristic looking and highly effective automatic spray cabin.

As with so many crazes few, if any, of the original companies from ten years ago who were supplying equipment and spray tanning fluids survive today and it is down to the more established sunbed companies, to continue with this diversification of the market into the salon.

The most important aspect of spray tanning is to say that it is a very effective cosmetic with no health benefits whatsoever but it is a highly suitable product for those who wish for a tan, who do not normally tan or for those who wish for a quick fix!

Spray tanning certainly has a place in the ‘instant’ market or indeed with people who do not easily tan but it cannot take the place of the commercial sunbed in the long run. Nor can it offer the health benefits of Ultraviolet and the creation of Vitamin D3 which is so essential in our lives in keeping us healthy and is a major factor at keeping cancer at bay.

Fake bake, spray tanning, sunless tanning are all synonyms for self-tanning products. These products are used to obtain a bronzed look while keeping away from the ultraviolet rays which have a tendency to damage the skin. Irrespective of the name you use to refer to them, these lotions are the best way to get a beautiful skin the whole year long.

Working Of These Products

Dihydroxyacetone or DHA is a chemical that is used to create these products for a fake bake. The darkening effects of DHA were discovered in the early 20th century. Ever since the formulas have been recreated and perfected to ensure they offer a more distinct glow to the body. Basically, tanning caused by DHA is a chemical reaction which tends to alter the color of the dead skin cells.

Chemically, Dihydroxyacetone is only a form of sugar. When slithered onto the body, it begins to react with the amino acids in the skin, making the cells turn brownish. Apart from this, Erythrulose is another chemical which functions in the same way but takes comparatively more time to color the body. Essentially, it is amalgamated with DHA to offer a longer lasting tan.

Choosing A Way For Product Application

Tanning products which offer a fake bake can be used on your own or with the help of experts in the salon. The best way of getting a tan is to get the product put on professionally.

Normally, salons make use of spray tanning. Two of the most popular ways of spray tanning are as follows:

* An automatic booth where an individual enters a cubicle, presses a button, and is sprayed with a product automatically.

* Airbrush tanning where an individual applies the tan on his or her body by making use of an airbrush.

Yet, there can be health hazards associated with tanning, not to mention the risk of sunburn, or looking “tanorexic” on your big day. This is the bride’s guide to getting tan for her wedding: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

First of all, be wary of getting overly tan for your wedding. Setting the health risks aside, it can just look tacky. When a bride has tanned too deeply, all you see in her wedding pictures is white dress, white teeth, and white pearl bridal jewelry. The rest of her face disappears, and the contrast against all that white just does not look pretty, especially in black and white photographs. So unless you want to look like nothing but teeth, dress, and pearl jewelry in your bridal photos, err on the side of caution when it comes to getting that tropical glow.

The next issue with tanning for a wedding is the question of safety. Many women can gradually achieve a healthy glow over time, but don’t try to force it. If you are getting married in the winter months, it is okay to be fair! It looks overdone when the bride shows up for her holiday nuptials looking like it is August and she has spent the whole summer as a lifeguard. To dress up your skin in the winter months, a subtle shimmer dusting powder is actually more attractive than a deep dark tanning bed tan. And honestly, tanning beds are not healthy at any time of year, even for a “base tan”.

There are a variety of sunless tanning methods available to the bride who wants to get a little glow before her wedding. The key is to start experimenting early so that you can determine which method works best for you. Some women swear by sunless tanning lotions, either the instant variety or the type that you use daily to build up a gradual color. On the other hand, some women (myself included!) turn orange from sunless tanning lotions, even the very best ones. There is also the risk of ending up with streaks or orange palms if you don’t have practice at applying the tanning lotion. Be sure to test out any lotions you are considering on all body parts; what turns into a lovely glow on your shoulders might end up giving your face the dreaded Oompa Loompa effect when it mixes with the oils your skin.

Another option is to get a professional spray tan for your wedding. Although more costly than using self-tanners at home, the results are also likely to be more consistent. The spray tan booth is one quick and easy option that some women swear by. The gold standard, though, is to have an airbrush tan professionally applied at a top notch salon. It is more costly, but the results are generally going to be the most flawless. Go for a trial run, and be sure to let the person know how much tan you are hoping to achieve, so they don’t go too dark. The best thing about the airbrush service is that they can use several shades to make your skin appeared more toned and contoured. How wonderful to get the appearance of toned arms for your strapless gown by hitting the salon instead of the gym!

Finally, remember that there is no rule that a bride needs to be tan. If you live your whole life pale, that is how your friends, family, and fiance know and love you; to show up looking differently on your wedding day would just be strange. If all you want is to get a hint of a glow on your cheeks or on your shoulders, a light dusting of a good bronzing powder may well be all you need (it can also help to blend out old tan lines when you are wearing a strapless gown). After all, as the bride, you will have a naturally radiant glow; you don’t want to cover it up with a too-deep tan.

This is known as the exposure time, or the time that you will be exposed to the UVA and UVB from the tanning lamps. Several different factors affect the answer. How strong is the piece of equipment you are using? How new are the lamps? How tan is your skin already? Will you be tanning areas that have not seen the sunlight? How easily does your skin tan? How much time do you have before you need to be tan.

Skin type affects exposure time more than any other factor. Skin types vary from olive skin that tans easily to pale skin that will not tan. Most people are in the middle of the spectrum. For those with olive skin that rarely burn longer exposure times are fine. For most people it is important to start with low exposure times to see how much UV their skin is able to handle and then slowly increasing as a base tan is developed. Certain skin types do not react well to UV light and should thus choose spray tanning as a better alternative to standard UV tanning.

The question of how strong the tanning booth that you will be using is can be answered by your certified salon technician. Equipment is usually rated by the amount of watts that it can supply to the bulbs and the type of lamps that it contains. Commercial tanning equipment varies greatly in its performance. The FDA regulates a maximum exposure time on each piece of equipment based on these factors and you should never tan for longer than this number.

Besides skin type the age of the bulbs along with the strength of the piece of tanning equipment is the second most important factor comb in determining exposure time. Tanning bulbs deteriorate over time and the more usage they have on them the less UV light they give off. The lamp life varies from manufacture to manufacture, and can range anywhere from 500 hours to 1000 hours for VHR systems. Good salon practice includes taking meter readings when new lamps are installed. Meter readings should then be conducted every 50 hours and when the tanning lamps have lost 25% of their output they should be replaced.

I started off with a indoors tanning lotion that wasn’t extremely potent. I wanted to start slowly. I was completely amazed to learn that I got genuine results. I could not believe it’s true. After years of being white, I was finally looking better.

I wanted to learn for what reason low priced tan accelerators were delivering results, so I browsed the net. I quickly learned that these lotions enlarge your skin’s production of melanin. An increased amount of this stuff, implies that more of it ends up in the pigment.
